A total of 16 teams are contesting the league, with Al Ahly the defending champions for the fifth year in a row and for the thirty-fourth time in total. The Egyptian season began on 6 August 2009 and ended on 17 May 2010.
The defending champions, Al Ahly, won its sixth league title in a row after a 3–0 win against Mansoura.
