Ivan Stambolić (5 November 1936 - 25 August 2000) was a Serbian politician. In his career he rose to become the president of Yugoslavia. In August 2000 he was assassinated just before a national, pivotal election, the event itself and reasoning for which is extremely important in understanding some of the events that occurred after the Yugoslav Wars.
