Sheikh Butti bin Suhail became ruler of Dubai on 16 February 1906, following the death of his cousin, Sheikh Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum, of heart disease. He continued the liberal policies of his predecessor, expanding Dubai's trading port.
