Chinese New Year film
A Chinese New Year film (simplified Chinese: 贺岁片; traditional Chinese: 賀歲片, Mandarin: hèsuìpiān, Cantonese: ho6seoi3pin3) or Lunar New Year film is a type of film released during the period surrounding the Chinese New Year. They are typically lighthearted, mass-market films that blend elements of comedy, action, romance, and fantasy. Though films with release dates timed to the Chinese New Year first appeared in the 1930s, Chinese New Year films were established as distinct genre in 1981 with the release of the film Security Unlimited. Chinese New Year films are associated primarily with the cinema of Hong Kong, and have emerged as a popular way to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
