It was the album's second single in the UK, and the lead single in the United States. The song is a tribute to John Lennon, who had been murdered 15 months earlier. In the U.S., "Empty Garden" reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 record chart. It peaked at number 51 on the British charts.
