Guangzhou Jianye Building Fire
The Guangzhou Jianye Building fire was a major blaze that occurred on 15 December 2013 at the Jianye Building in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. The fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit in the main power line on the building’s ground floor, which ignited combustible materials stored in the corridor. The fire affected an area of approximately 12,500 square meters, but no casualties were reported.
The Guangzhou Fire Department deployed 28 fire squads, 58 fire engines, and 380 personnel to the scene to bring the fire under control. Preliminary official estimates placed the economic losses at around 40 million yuan. The final assessment put the total losses at 40.66 million yuan. However, the Guangzhou Wenzhou Chamber of Commerce reported that 32 Wenzhou merchants who had leased warehouse space in the building collectively suffered losses nearing 80 million yuan.
