Since the 2020s, the United States has faced a growing shortage of housing. The scope and effect of the housing crisis depends on the affected region or segment of the population. Artificial scarcity in the supply of housing, due to NIMBYism, has been a significant factor in making housing more expensive. Freddie Mac estimated that the shortage of homes increased by 52%, to 3.8 million units, between 2018 and 2020.
