Joy is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film written and directed by David O. Russell. It stars Jennifer Lawrence as Joy Mangano, a self-made entrepreneur who rose to fame as the inventor of the Miracle Mop. The supporting cast includes Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Édgar Ramírez, Diane Ladd, Virginia Madsen, and Isabella Rossellini.
The film reunites Russell with Lawrence, De Niro, and Cooper, who had previously collaborated on Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013). Principal photography began in February 2015 in Boston and surrounding areas. Drawing loosely from Mangano's life, the screenplay presents a fictionalized narrative about a woman navigating family dysfunction, corporate politics, and personal reinvention.
Joy premiered on December 13, 2015, in New York City and was released theatrically in the United States on December 25 by 20th Century Fox. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for Lawrence’s performance but criticism of its tone and narrative structure. It grossed over $101 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.
At the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, Lawrence won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She also received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress, becoming the youngest actor to receive four Oscar nominations by age 25. The film was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
