- Internal conflict in Myanmar
- At least 8 people are killed and more than a dozen others are injured following an attack on Tatmadaw checkpoints, police outposts and the 105th Mile Trade Center by several insurgent groups in Muse, Shan State. The State Counselor's office issues a statement claiming that the Kachin Independence Army, Ta'ang National Liberation Army and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army were involved in the attack. - Turkish military intervention in Syria

- 2016 South Korean political scandal
- An interim report by South Korean prosecutors implicates President Park Geun-hye in a political scandal involving her close friend Choi Soon-sil. Three people have been indicted in relation to the scandal. - In tennis, Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic 6–3, 6–4 in the final of the 2016 ATP World Tour finals and finishes the year as the world's number 1. (The Guardian)
- 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
- In motorsport, Jimmie Johnson wins the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship with a victory in the final race of the season. It is his 7th Cup championship, which ties the all-time record set by Richard Petty in 1979 and Dale Earnhardt in 1994. (USA Today)
