Rio 2 is a 2014 American animated musical comedy film produced by Blue Sky Studios and directed by Carlos Saldanha. It is the sequel to the 2011 animated film and the second installment of the Rio franchise. The title refers to the city of Rio de Janeiro, where the first film was set and Rio 2 begins, though most of its plot occurs in the Amazon rainforest. Set three years after the first film, it follows Blu, Jewel, and their children leaving Rio for the Amazon to find more blue macaws, where Blu struggles to fit in after Jewel reunites with her long-lost father, while Nigel the cockatoo pursues them to exact his revenge. The film features Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, Rodrigo Santoro, and Jake T. Austin reprising their roles from the previous film with new members including Kristin Chenoweth, Bruno Mars, Rita Moreno, and Andy García. This was Miguel Ferrer's final feature film before his death in 2017.
Rio 2 was released internationally on March 20, 2014, and on April 11, 2014, in American theaters by 20th Century Fox. It grossed $498.7 million worldwide against a production budget of $130 million. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the animation, voice acting, and music, but criticized the story, writing, and characters. The film is dedicated to the memory of screenwriter Don Rhymer, who died on November 28, 2012. This was Blue Sky Studios' only sequel film outside of the Ice Age franchise. This was also the final Rio film to be produced by Blue Sky Studios before its closure on April 10, 2021.
