Safonovsky District (Russian: Сафо́новский райо́н) is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the twenty-five in Smolensk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the northern central part of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,258.46 square kilometers (872.00 sq mi). Its administrative center is the town of Safonovo. Population: 61,572 (2010 Census); 65,251 (2002 Census); 17,115 (1989 Soviet census). The population of Safonovo accounts for 74.9% of the district's total population.
