The prison was established in 1933 as the State Workhouse at Sønder Omme (Danish: Statens Arbejdshus ved Sønder Omme) as a place where prison laborers took an active part in the cultivation of the moor and land on the prison ground. It became the State Prison at Sdr. Omme in 1973. Today the prison has about 1000 hectares of land and forestry and both plants and cattle are bred on the prison ground and surrounding areas.
