Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (Chinese: 上海对外经贸大学; abbreviated as SUIBE), formerly known as Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (abbreviated as SIFT), was originally founded in 1960. It is affiliated with the City of Shanghai and funded by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. It is the only university in East China specializing in international business, dedicated to cultivating talent in international economics and trade.
The university was originally under the direct administration of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of China. In 1994, it came under the leadership of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. It was one of the world’s first and China’s first universities to host a WTO Chair.
As of March 2024, SUIBE covers an area of approximately 670,000 square meters. It comprises 20 secondary-level units (colleges/institutes), offers 35 undergraduate programs, and features facilities such as student dormitories, the Library and Information Building, and the Xuesi Building.
The university has over 14,000 students and more than 1,500 faculty and staff members, including nearly 900 full-time faculty. It also hosts 1 postdoctoral research station, 1 first-level doctoral discipline, 6 second-level doctoral disciplines, 7 first-level master’s disciplines, 41 second-level master’s disciplines, 13 categories of professional master's degrees, 2 key disciplines of Shanghai, 2 high-level disciplines under Shanghai's "Peak and Plateau" program, and 5 key disciplines designated by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.
