Stonehenge road tunnel
The Stonehenge road tunnel is a proposal for a tunnel in Wiltshire, England, to enclose a section of the A303 in a tunnel under part of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site to remove road traffic from view of the stones. Various proposals for a tunnel in the area have been made since the mid-1990s but remain controversial. UNESCO had previously raised concerns that the World Heritage Site would be at risk due to the earthworks associated with a tunnel project.
A 2013 proposal was designed to improve the landscape around the monument, while reducing congestion and improving safety on the A303, and was part of proposals to change the site in other ways including moving the visitors' centre. The tunnel was approved in 2017 and received planning permission in 2020, but with costs estimated at £1.7 billion, it was cancelled in 2024.
