The Night of the Hunter (novel)

The Night of the Hunter is a 1953 thriller novel by American author Davis Grubb. The book was a national bestseller and a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award.

It is a Southern Gothic tale about an ex-convict posing as a chaplain in order to marry a widow and to locate the hidden loot of her previous husband. He proceeds to commit uxoricide and then hunts down his new stepchildren. The tale is loosely based on a series of real-life murders by the serial killer Harry Powers in Quiet Dell, West Virginia.
