Synonyms

Ephebe is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Lichinaceae. These lichens form dark, hair-like mats that spread across rocks and tree bark, resembling tangled black wool. Unlike many other lichens, Ephebe species partner with blue-green algae that can capture nitrogen from the air. The genus contains thirteen recognized species found in various parts of the world, from temperate regions to more tropical areas.
