Greenwich Maritime Centre
The Greenwich Maritime Centre (GMI) is a research and postgraduate teaching hub within the University of Greenwich, situated in the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London. Established in September 2015, the GMC succeeded the Greenwich Maritime Institute, which operated from 1998 to 2014. It is part of the university's School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The GMC's mission is to foster a deeper understanding of the relationship between the sea and society. It aims to serve as a platform for developing sustainable solutions to maritime challenges by bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders. The centre's objectives include promoting scholarly research, disseminating findings, providing postgraduate education, and offering consultancy services.
One of the key academic offerings at the GMC is the MSc in Global Shipping Management. This postgraduate program addresses the challenges of the global shipping industry by combining theoretical knowledge with emerging industry trends.
The GMC is located in the Old Royal Naval College, a site with a rich maritime heritage. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, the college was originally constructed between 1696 and 1712 to serve as the Royal Navy's Greenwich Hospital. The site later became the Royal Naval College from 1873 until 1998 . Today, it is part of the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also includes the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.
The GMC's location in Greenwich places it at the heart of Britain's maritime history. The area is renowned for its connections to naval exploration and timekeeping, being the location of the Prime Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time. This setting provides students and researchers with a unique environment to study maritime issues within a historically significant context.
Through its interdisciplinary approach and strategic location, the Greenwich Maritime Centre continues to contribute to the advancement of maritime knowledge and education.
