Professional wrestling in Mexico

Professional wrestling in Mexico it has existed since the late 19th century, but became popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Throughout the 20th century, professional wrestling had established itself as one of the most popular sports in Mexico, so much so that it has played an important role in national popular culture.

Professional wrestling often competed with boxing in television ratings, with both disciplines reaching their peak in the mid- to late 20th century. At that time, the industry was taken more seriously by the Mexican sports press and it was not considered a simple "spectacle" as it is today. For this and other reasons, the popularity of professional wrestling in Mexico declined over the years until it resurfaced in the 2010s with streaming services.

With the globalization of professional wrestling, cities like Monterrey, Tijuana, and Mexico City became important venues for foreing promotions on the annual tours.
