On 13 May 2025, Israeli airstrikes hit the compound of the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip, and the surrounding area, killing at least 28 people and injuring at least 40 others. Israel said that the attack killed Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar alongside other Hamas militants, including Rafah Brigade commander Muhammad Shabana. The IDF argued that the targets were in a militant complex under a school adjacent to the hospital and possibly also under the hospital itself.
