Trump variously referred to himself as a conservative, a "common-sense conservative", a "man of common sense", and a nationalist in a "true sense", while also initially saying he identified with Democrats on some or most issues. His most consistent positions have been characterized as protectionist on trade, anti-immigrant, and nationalistic in foreign policy.
