Transgender rights in the United Kingdom

Transgender rights in the United Kingdom have varied significantly over time. Current rights for transgender people—people whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth—include legal and social recognition, a number of legal protections, some access to gender-affirming care, and other civil and human rights. The UK was one of the first countries in the world to introduce legislation allowing transgender people to legally change their gender, with the Gender Recognition Act 2004. However, transgender people in the UK continue to face significant challenges, including barriers to healthcare, discrimination and prejudice, increased media focus, and opposition to their rights.
